President's Message - Sept. 2016
Hello again fellow Assiniboia Chapter Members!
I hope you all had a great summer and had time to spend with family and friends and enjoy the beautiful Saskatchewan summer.
As we are halfway into 2016, it was time for an update. We had a bit of a slow start to the year but thing started rolling after a few months and the new team gathered speed.
Tammy Moyse, Education Chair arranged for a Specification Writing course in June that was well attended and feedback was very good. We actually had too many people interested and had to arrange for a second session again this October to ensure everyone had a chance to attend. This seminar is great for recertification points and was a great topic as well.
Unfortunately for the Chapter, Tammy later took a new job in the private sector…so we wish her the best in her new endeavors, while already starting the search for a replacement Education Chair. If anyone is interested in the committee chair position, please contact any one of the executive team…we will be happy to fill you in on the duties of the position and what’s required!
NIGP Forum and Products Expo
I have just returned from the 2016 Annual NIGP Forum and Products Exposition held in National Habour, Maryland. This was just across the Potomac River from Washington DC. The conference was hosted at the Gaylord National Habour Hotel and Convention Center and it was a wonderful setting and place to stay for a busy 4 days of plenary sessions, education sessions and motivational speakers. If anyone is interested, I have some great material on a variety of topics including; Total Cost of Ownership, IT Sourcing and Contracts Negotiations, IT maintenance considerations, as well as some interesting documents on promoting the value of Procurement and using spend analytics to promote the role of procurement. I did have a bit of free time and took in a night tour of many of the local monuments and a quick visit to the local Casino in the area…Unfortunately it appears I was there only to support the local economy as I was not successful in taking home big jackpot! I want to thank the Chapter for funding my attendance and sincerely wish more members from our Chapter could attend and take part in the experience and chance to learn at this event.
I had some great discussion with other Canadian Chapter representatives that are facing the same challenges such as low membership numbers, revenue generation challenges and how to get more volunteers out to assist with the Chapter…unfortunately no miracle cures for anyone. We did have a great discussion on finding ways to jointly advertise and promote and potentially revenue share seminars between NIGP Chapters and the CPPC (Canadian Public Procurement Council)…in the end we weren’t sure about how revenue sharing would work, but did agree that we could cooperate to jointly promote training in our areas as a way to get access to more education seminars and both groups can earn points for certification and recertification.
I was also surprised to win an award for our Chapter at the Annual President’s Luncheon, where the Assiniboia Chapter won the 1st place award for small chapters with the highest percentage of members that have their CPPB Certifications!! Great job everyone!
On a side note… Gord Sears, fellow Canadian, past-President of the Ontario Public Buyers Association, former NIGP Board member and a previous visitor to our Regina Chapter, received a Distinguished Service Award from NIGP.
And on a sad note, long time NIGP event photographer Pam McComb’s husband fell seriously ill right at the very end of the conference and was rushed to hospital, and sadly passed away the next day. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Pam and her family in this sad time. To assist Pam a GoFundMe account has been set up by one of her friends: In Loving Memory of Joe Podmostko by Nicole Hayes.
We are planning the next general meeting and have a speaker lined up to speak on the topic of vendor management, then there is the fall training course and then the annual general meeting and the year then comes to a close. We have plans for more excellent training seminars next year and hope to build on the success from this year.
We will continue to look for more volunteers and I want to thank all the executive and committee members and chairs for their continued dedication to the Chapter and thank all the members for continuing to remain supporters of our local Chapter!
Let’s all have a great fall and look forward to seeing you at upcoming meetings or training sessions!!
