President's Message – February, 2017

Hello to all Chapter Members and Potential Chapter members!

I trust you are all well along your way to starting the new year (I am late getting this message out!!) and well into fiscal year end activities already. This past year has brought quite a bit of change to the Provincial landscape with regards to budgets and restrictions within the Crown and Public sector. I view this as a great time to really do what procurement does best…find best value and negotiate for the best terms possible! As well as review everything to determine if it is really required or if it can wait possibly as well!

Education and Training

While the above noted changes bring challenges to training budgets and off site excursions for all our members, that just means that this year the Chapter will have to find some innovative ways to bring value to our members. This can mean anything from a sponsored speaker event to a reduced rate seminar subsidized by the Chapter. You can rest assured that the Chapter executive is looking at all avenues possible to bring value in this challenging environment.

While subsidizing the training or seminars is possible, with such a small chapter a relatively small budget, if we were to continue with that approach we would not be able to sustain it for very long, as speaker costs and seminar costs have not gotten any less expensive over the last few years. We will be prudent but aware that we need to deliver value as well.

Speakers

We plan to bring in speakers on valuable topics of interest for the Chapter members and have had a few suggestions that I am confident we will be able to fulfill on. It takes time to develop these in house and I do like the challenge, as do all the executive I am sure!

Schedule

Meeting schedule has been set for 2017 and can be found on this page…if there is anything else you would like to see or have additional suggestions for web content or speaker/seminar content, please let anyone on the executive know and we will take it into consideration.

Certification and Re-certification

Rules have changed slightly and they now allow for a wider range of professional development topics (including leadership, project management and communications, etc.) that were previously considers “soft” topics that did not count towards recertification. Those rules have now been opened up and this also means we have more opportunity to use speakers and topics like that for meetings as well that can help add up for recertification points as well!

Forum 2017

NIGP National Forum and Products Exposition is in Salt Lake City this year...making it a bit closer than some previous years and I would encourage anyone (budget allowing) that can come along to book in and experience a Forum for the first time! It is amazing the education sessions and plenary speakers are excellent and well worth the experience. It is great to see and room of a 1000 plus individuals, representing their respective states, provinces, chapters and agencies and finding out they are all working towards a common goal…to better the public procurement profession, learn as much as they can and to take back to their agencies, as well as share their successes (and sometimes failures) for everyone to learn from. I will be attending this year again and welcome increasing our Chapter presence by having someone tag along to take in this event as well! They have a great “Canadian discount” this year on registrations to help encourage Canadian members to come down and enjoy the experience this year. Check it out on the NIGP national office web link.

Elections and Committees for 2017

Just wanted to send a big shout out to Doug Zimmer for volunteering to come back into the fold and take on the Second Vice-President! Welcome back Doug! (not that you were gone by any means!!) I would also like to thank the rest of the executive team for staying on in their respective roles…although it seems as we have gotten off sequence over the last few years with departures, retirements, etc. and the roles are not split as well for future elections when terms are up...we will have to work on that…We still have a vacant chair for the Professional Development Chair this year and if anyone is interested in joining the team, this is a great way to start out…and with current budget limitations with our member agencies, it might be a light year to start out on…

I look forward to a great 2017 and serving you for another year as President…I look back at when I first joined this organization and how time as flown and the enjoyment I have gained from meeting and working with all of you and encourage others to do the same…join in, become a voice for your agency and earn valuable certification and recertification points while doing so!
