Fall UPDATE - October 1st, 2017
President’s Message – September, 2017
Hello to all Chapter Members and Potential Chapter members!
I trust all our members had a great summer and had time to kick back and enjoy the exceptionally warm summer we had this year. Unfortunately, the warm temps also brought problems with record forest fires in BC and surrounding areas, leaving many families vulnerable and displaced, so I am hoping things settle down and people can have a chance to rebuild and return to normal soon.
For myself it was a relatively quiet summer, only getting it a small amount of camping, but getting a lot of yard and home repair things off the list.
I will provide some updates…
Education and Training
We still have an opening for someone on the Education Committee as chair and along with that have had limited success with seminars due to the limited budgets recently. We will be looking at trying to bring something in this fall that is of interest to the members and hopefully we get enough participation to host the event.
We plan to continue to bring in speakers on valuable topics of interest for the Chapter members and have a couple in the hopper still right now. We have had great turnout at some recent lunch meetings with speakers on a variety of topics and we want to continue that trend. There are opportunities for future discussion on the CETA (Canadian European Trae Agreement) that comes into effect in September as well as other hot topics…so stay tuned! If there is anything else you would like to see or have additional suggestions for web content or speaker/seminar content, please let anyone on the executive know and we will take it into consideration.
Meeting schedule can still be found on the left of this page…and schedule for 2018 will be decided soon after the AGM in November.
I recently returned from attending the 72nd Annual NIGP National Forum and Products Exposition that was in Salt Lake City this year...there were almost 1100 delegates this year. There were multiple Plenary speakers to spark your energy and offer great tips for re-energizing you and your work environment, multiple training sessions and dozens of networking and training seminars to take in. My calendar remained very full this year as I also was asked to co-moderate a “Canadian Networking” session with Stephanie Dion from the City of Red Deer, as well as was a table leader for the “Extreme Networking” session...with my table topic being “Technology” (go figure!). I also attended the Chapter President’s Luncheon where awards were given out to Chapters for achievements in the last year. We were not lucky enough to win anything this year, but we have been successful in the past, so it was someone else’s turn this year!
All in all the sessions were very good and I have downloaded as much content as I can form the event that I will share with everyone by sending out a list of sessions and handouts available and if anyone would like a copy they can contact me afterwards.
Elections and Committees for 2017
Everyone should be aware that the Annual Chapter AGM is coming up in November and we will be canvassing for some people to participate in the Chapter Executive or standing committees as we have had a couple people leave and/or retire this last year and we are still looking for assistance with a couple committees. Being on the executive is a great way to earn recertification points and pump up your resume with some experience on a non-profit board or committee. We are also open to new ideas and collaboration from members at any time related to what the chapter wants to see in the future and interesting topics or training to pursue for the members.
I look forward to a wrapping up 2017 in the next few months and handing the reins over to the new incoming President…I wholeheartedly request that you get involved and take a spot on the executive as a great learning experience and eventually if you become President you too can experience the NIGP National Forum…!!!
