President's Message - Jan 2016

Hello fellow Chapter Members!

I am pleased to be accepted as President for another two year term for the Assiniboia Chapter of NIGP. Recent elections held in late November 2015 have proven to me the commitment of our member to the Chapter is very strong and we will strive to bring long lasting value to our members and focus on bringing in educational opportunities for the membership that will elevate our knowledge and expertise in this increasingly complex world of public procurement.

We are already lining up speakers for our general meetings, which will be the focus of general meetings going forward, as we attempt to bring in speakers of topics relevant to the profession that all can learn form and as well use for points for recertification if at all possible. We have already identified some areas of interest and we are hoping to align speakers to those areas and our meeting dates to make this a successful year.

With recent initiatives such as Priority Sask, the renewal of the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA), procurement audits and other challenges facing our profession, it is increasingly important that we continue to bring in education and training opportunities for the membership and in that light, our Education Chair has already brought some great educational opportunities and ideas to the table that we hope to produce this year and I am also looking to approach and potentially partner with our member organizations or crowns to see about partnering to offer the educational sessions that interest them and would bring the most value to their organizations, which I think will then become a win/win for the Chapter and our members.

It is important that as Accredited NIGP members we need to strive to keep our designations current and gain recertification points each year as the changes in to recertification in the last couple years have put more emphasis on training and education and in that light, the Chapter will endeavor to do that as well. We do have challenges with regards to training budgets in our member organizations and our best way to assist, and remain successful, is to make this training relevant to our members and partner with them whenever possible to bring what they need, when they need it and where they need it!

I would also like to invite anyone from the Membership to join me in attending the NIGP National Forum to be held in National Harbour, Maryland this year. There are upwards of 1000 attendees and not only does that make it a great networking event, but they offer hundreds of sessions on topics that are of interest to you that you can pick and choose form, as well as bring in excellent motivational speakers, products exposition and social events as well. Not only that, you gain up to 20 Contact Hours for recertification as well!! There is usually time set aside for some personal time as well…I highly recommend this for the procurement professional to attend, as you will return refreshed and eager to implement new ideas as well as know there are people out there all across this continent and world in public procurement facing the same challenges and are able to offer support and ideas that can help you step up your game and become even better!

I welcome any new members to our organization and if any members knows of someone that would like to get involved, please direct them to one of the Executive (see the “Contacts” page) who will gladly contact them and let them know where they can help and participate in the Chapter (such as assist one of the committee chairs..) or just how to become a member to gain access to the Education events and speaking engagements. Feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions about the chapter or would like to see something new or have a special topic that interests you and we will try and address it, as we are always looking for new ideas!

Hope everyone has a great 2016 and I look forward to working for you in the coming year!

Regards,

Dave Gower
